Labels Unwrapped

Enabling consumers to navigate food label laws and make informed food purchasing decisions.

Food labels are meant to inform, protect, and empower consumers. Even though the law prohibits misleading food labels, consumers still find some labels confusing and deceptive. From certifications to various health claims, ambiguous language and imagery can make it difficult for shoppers to know what they are eating.

First launched in 2015 as a collaborate effort between CAFS and student web designers at Dartmouth College’s DALI Lab, Labels Unwrapped serves as a user-friendly online resource that breaks down the law of food labels using a series of interactive illustrated labels spanning different product categories and marketing terms, such as “gluten-free” and “grass-fed.”
