Seafood Law and Policy Project

Providing legal analysis of the laws and regulations governing wild-capture and aquaculture seafood.

Seafood is a globally significant industry, providing a major source of food for billions of people and supporting the economic livelihoods and cultural practices of coastal communities worldwide. Encompassing both farmed and wild-caught production, the sector raises complex legal questions related to property rights, natural resource management, supply chain regulation, food safety and authenticity, labor, and environmental protection.

CAFS’s first seafood report, “Seafood Fraud: Analysis of Legal Approaches in the United States,” examines how the complexity of global seafood supply chains creates opportunities for fraud. “Fair Shares? An Analysis of Catch Share Programs in the U.S.” explores common concerns associated with catch share programs. A forthcoming resource will analyze the regulatory framework governing the United States’ rapidly expanding aquaculture sector. Together, these reports lay the foundation for CAFS’s ongoing provision of informational resources addressing the law and policy that governs the seafood industry.
