Food Systems Resilience

Strengthening food and agricultural systems against the impacts of extreme weather and other natural disasters by identifying policy tools and strategies that support long-term, holistic food systems resilience.

A resilient food system is one that can mitigate and adapt. As the food system continues to experience devastating shocks due to stressors like extreme weather, pandemics, and other challenges, long-term resilience planning becomes even more important.

The Food Systems Resilience project creates resources intended to support local, regional, and state planners and policymakers, food policy councils, and community organizations tasked with addressing the multidimensional impacts of food system stressors. The term “resilience” has seen a rapid influx in recent years, as new government and philanthropic funded programs set “resilience” goals and metrics. Common understandings of resilience focus on short-term risk management in the context of emergency preparedness and response. Alternatively, this project addresses the need for long-term and comprehensive food systems resilience planning as essential for a thriving food system.
