Institutional Food Procurement Policy Project

Analyzing institutional food purchasing policy to support agricultural livelihoods and the provision of nutritious, responsibly grown, and culturally relevant foods in schools, prisons, and other institutions.

Public and private institutions, including schools, early childhood centers, colleges, hospitals, and correctional facilities, spend billions of dollars on food each year. In fiscal year 2023, the National School Lunch Program alone spent $17.2 billion to provide 4.6 billion lunches. Collectively, these institutions have significant purchasing power to shift the market toward responsible production, community health and nutrition, and vibrant local agricultural economies.

The Institutional Procurement Policy Project analyzes procurement policy trends, accomplishments, and gaps; and makes recommendations to advance thoughtful food purchasing in schools, prisons, and other institutions.
